The Speaker of the House of Representatives represented the Parliament of Malta at the commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and met with Hungary’s highest authorities
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Carmelo Abela, represented the Parliament of Malta at the official commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, held on 23 October in Budapest, at the invitation of the Hungarian Parliament.
23 October is a day of historical significance for the Hungarian people, commemorating the beginning of the 1956 Revolution, when thousands of citizens revolted against Soviet rule to demand freedom, democracy and independence for their country. Although the revolution was forcibly suppressed, it remained a symbol of the courage and determination of the Hungarian people in their struggle for freedom.
During the commemorations, Speaker Abela had the opportunity to meet and discuss various matters with Hungary’s highest authorities, including the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and the Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament. He also met with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, as well as several Speakers of Parliament and other dignitaries representing different countries and international organisations.
Speaker Abela expressed his appreciation that the Parliament of Malta was among the parliaments invited to participate in this historic occasion. He stated that Malta’s presence at such commemorations is important as a demonstration of respect and solidarity among peoples, while also serving as a reminder that freedom and democracy are values that must continue to be safeguarded and strengthened.
Speaker Abela reiterated that such occasions, beyond their historical significance, provide an important opportunity for the Parliament of Malta to further strengthen its contacts and relations with other parliaments and international institutions. He emphasised that parliamentary diplomacy plays an essential role in fostering dialogue, cooperation and stronger relations between countries.
